Since the 1960s, Dennis Oppenheim (Electric City, Washington, 1938)
has made significant contributions in changing the language of contemporary
art. His first personal show was in 1968 and was organised by the
John Gibson Gallery in New York. Since then, various exhibitions
have been hosted in leading museums and foundations throughout the
world such as the Tate Gallery of London, Amsterdams Stedelijk
Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern
Art in New York, and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville
de Paris.
Amongst the numerous public commissions, the Ballerup Kommune of
Copenhagen, Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, New Yorks Whitney
Museum of American Art and the Olympic Park in South Korea stand
out.
He participated in the Vancouver Sculpture Biennale in 2007 and
in 2009 he presented his recent artistic program in a large exhibition
at the Marta Herford Museum of Herford, Germany.
For the 1997 Venice Biennale, his personal show was exhibited in
the industrial area of Marghera, curated by Germano Celant. In 2009,
Oppenheim was a leading figure in the Splashbuilding exhibition
