| Pietro Consagra

Pietro Consagra was born in Mazara del Vallo (TR) in 1920 but he lives and works in Milan and Rome.
On March 15, 1947, together with Carla Accardi, Ugo Attardi, Piero Dorazio, Mino Guerrini, Achille Perilli, Antonio Sanfilippo and Giulio Turcato, he signed the manifest of the Forma group, published in the unique issue of Forma 1 magazine. Since 1948, his concept of sculpture which does not accept different points of view has reflected an exclusively frontal conception. In that frontality, the previous presence of signs breaks to pieces and articulates by overlapping, and emptiness becomes one of the elements of his works.
Later, he's got more and more interested in colors and materials, becoming the elements of his sculptures. The proof is the creation of numerous works of art made up of colored wood, notched iron or enameled boxes as well as close-up stones and pieces of marble of different colors. Other than his participation in numerous national and international exhibitions with the Forma group, among his recent presentations, it's worth mentioning his participation in the Venice Biennial in 1982, the retrospective presented at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna of Rome in 1989 and the one presented at the Hermitage Museum of Saint Petersburg in 1991. In 1996, he exhibited his work at the Palazzo di Brera in Milan; in 1997, at the Institut Mathildenhöe of Darmstadt; in 2000, at the Galerie der Stadt of Stuttgart and at Museion in Bolzano. In 2003, the sculpture entitled Doppia Bifrontale was donated to the European Parliament in Strasbourg by Italy.

His relationship with Galleria Fumagalli began in 1996 when on the occasion of the exhibition presented at the Accademia di Belle Arti (Fine Arts Academy) of Brera in Milan the publication of the volume entitled Scultura e architettura was introduced, cured by Giovanni Maria Accame and Gabriella di Milia. In 1997, the exhibition and catalogue of Banche e Panche were presented at the gallery and the anastatic reprint of the theory book entitled La città frontale was published, written by Pietro Consagra in 1969.
In 2002, he exhibited his work at Galleria Fumagalli again, presenting a series of sculptures made up of polychromatic marble and, on that occasion, the book entitled Pietro Consagra was presented, cured by Ada Masoero.
